Award-winning hair care just minutes across the Ottawa River. Salon Rouge in the ByWard Market has been serving Gatineau clients since 2004.
If you live in Gatineau and you've been looking for a salon that actually listens, that takes the time to understand your hair, and that delivers results you can count on, Salon Rouge is worth the short drive across the river. We're located at 222 Dalhousie Street in Ottawa's ByWard Market, and we've been welcoming clients from Hull, Aylmer, the Gatineau sector, and everywhere in between since we opened our doors in 2004.
The drive is easy. If you're coming from Hull, you're looking at about 10 minutes via the Portage Bridge. From Aylmer or the Gatineau sector, it's maybe 15 minutes depending on traffic. Many of our Gatineau clients already cross the river for work, shopping, or dining in the Market, and they've made Salon Rouge part of that routine. We've become the salon they trust, and we'd love the chance to earn your trust too.
Gatineau is a bilingual city, and we understand that. Several members of our team speak French, so you'll feel comfortable from the moment you walk in. Whether you want to discuss your colour goals in French or English (or both), we'll make sure the communication is clear and the results are exactly what you had in mind. Our team also includes stylists who speak Mandarin, Persian, Turkish, and Portuguese, because great hair shouldn't have a language barrier.

We recommend booking online for the fastest confirmation, but you're always welcome to call or email us directly. If you're a new client, let us know a bit about your hair history and goals when you book. That way your stylist can prepare and make the most of your appointment time.
There are salons in Gatineau. We know that. So why do hundreds of clients from across the river choose to drive to the ByWard Market for their hair? Here's what we hear from them most often.
The quality speaks for itself. Salon Rouge was named one of the Top 3 Hair Salons in Ottawa for 2025. Our founder Amir has over 30 years of experience and has trained with Redken, Wella, and Schwarzkopf at the highest levels. When Gatineau clients come to us after a bad colour correction or a haircut that never quite looked right, we fix it. And then they stay.
It's closer than you think. From Hull, you're across the Portage Bridge and at our door in about 10 minutes. From the Gatineau sector via the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge, it's roughly 15 minutes. Many of our Gatineau clients pair their appointment with brunch in the Market, a walk along the canal, or some shopping on Sussex Drive. It becomes a whole outing, not just a hair appointment.
Bilingual service is standard, not an afterthought. We know that Gatineau is a predominantly French-speaking city, and we've built a team that reflects that. You can discuss your colour formula, ask about aftercare, or talk through a big style change in French. We want you to feel completely understood, because that's how we deliver the best results.
Real consultations, not rushed appointments. Every new client gets a proper consultation before we pick up scissors or mix colour. We look at your hair's condition, your face shape, your lifestyle, and your maintenance preferences. This is especially important for clients coming to us after disappointing experiences elsewhere. We take the time to get it right the first time.
A diverse, experienced team. Our stylists come from different backgrounds and bring different specialties. Whether you need a corrective colour, a curly hair cut, extensions, a keratin treatment, or a complete style overhaul, there's someone on our team who specializes in exactly that. You're not getting a generalist who does a bit of everything. You're getting a specialist who does your service exceptionally well.
Cross-border convenience. Many Gatineau residents already work in Ottawa. If your office is downtown, booking a lunch-hour trim or an after-work colour appointment at Salon Rouge means you're not adding any extra drive time to your day. We're open until 8 PM on Wednesdays and Thursdays specifically for clients who need evening availability.
Salon Rouge was founded by Amir in 2004, but his career in hair started long before that. With more than three decades of hands-on experience, Amir is one of the most accomplished stylists in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. He holds advanced certifications from Schwarzkopf, Redken, and Wella. He's won the Best Colourist award from Schwarzkopf. And he's built a salon culture where every stylist on his team is held to the same exacting standards he sets for himself.
Amir is known for his corrective colour work. If you've had a colour disaster at another salon, if your blonde went brassy or your balayage came out patchy, Amir has the technical skill and the patience to bring your hair back. Clients travel from across the National Capital Region specifically for his corrective services, and many of them come from Gatineau.
He's also deeply committed to education. Every stylist at Salon Rouge continues to train and update their skills regularly. The salon invests in ongoing education because hair trends, techniques, and products are always advancing. When you sit in a chair at Salon Rouge, you're getting the benefit of a team that never stops learning.
Colour is where Salon Rouge really stands apart. Whether you want a subtle, natural-looking balayage, a bold fashion colour, a full set of highlights, or a complete colour correction, our team has the training and the eye to deliver. We use professional-grade colour lines from Schwarzkopf, Redken, and Wella, and we choose the right product for your specific hair type and desired result.
We see a lot of Gatineau clients who come to us after trying to fix colour issues at other salons. Maybe the highlights were too chunky, maybe the toner washed out in a week, maybe the blonde pulled too warm. These are technical problems that require technical solutions, and our colourists know how to diagnose what went wrong and build a plan to get you where you want to be.
For major colour changes, we'll always be honest about what's achievable in one session versus what needs to be done in stages. We'd rather take the time to do it safely and correctly than rush the process and risk damaging your hair. That honesty is something our Gatineau clients tell us they appreciate most.
This is non-negotiable at Salon Rouge. Before any service begins, your stylist will sit down with you and talk through what you want, what your hair can handle, and what will work best for your lifestyle. If you're low-maintenance, we're not going to recommend a style that needs touch-ups every four weeks. If you're active and wash your hair daily, we'll factor that into our product and colour recommendations.
For Gatineau clients visiting us for the first time, this consultation is especially important. It's our chance to understand your hair history, see how your hair reacts to different products, and build a relationship that lasts. Many of our longest-standing clients are from Gatineau, and those relationships all started with a thorough first consultation.
The Ottawa-Gatineau region has one of the most challenging climates for hair in Canada. Winters are brutally cold and dry, with indoor heating that strips moisture from your hair. Summers are hot and humid, which means frizz, colour fade, and styles that won't hold. Spring and fall bring their own mix of rain, wind, and temperature swings.
Our stylists understand this climate because they live in it too. We recommend cuts, colours, and treatments that account for what your hair will face when you walk out the door. We'll suggest the right products for winter moisture, summer humidity protection, and colour preservation. And we'll help you build a simple at-home routine that keeps your hair looking great between appointments.
This is something that matters especially for Gatineau clients. The Gatineau hills can get even colder than downtown Ottawa in winter, and if you're spending time outdoors at Gatineau Park or walking along the river, your hair is dealing with real environmental stress. We factor all of that in.
We've heard it from Gatineau clients again and again: "I wish I'd found you sooner." The short drive across the river is nothing compared to the difference in results. When you find a stylist who really understands your hair, who remembers your preferences, who consistently delivers, the drive becomes the easiest part of the whole experience.
Many of our Gatineau clients have been with us for 10+ years. They've followed their stylists through career changes and life changes. They bring their kids, their partners, their friends. That kind of loyalty doesn't come from marketing. It comes from doing great work, every single time.
Getting from Gatineau to Salon Rouge is straightforward no matter which part of the city you're coming from. Here are the three main routes, plus parking tips once you arrive.
If you're in the Hull sector, the Portage Bridge is your fastest option. Head south on Boulevard Alexandre-Taché or Rue Laurier toward the bridge. Cross into Ottawa, and you'll be on Wellington Street. Turn left onto Elgin Street or continue east toward Rideau Street. From Rideau, turn left onto Dalhousie Street. Salon Rouge is at 222 Dalhousie, right in the heart of the ByWard Market.
Total drive time from Hull: approximately 8 to 12 minutes depending on traffic. During morning and evening rush hours (7:30-9:00 AM and 4:00-6:00 PM), add 5 to 10 minutes. Midday and weekends are usually smooth.
The Alexandra Bridge connects the Canadian Museum of History area in Hull directly to the east end of the ByWard Market. If you're coming from the area around the museum, Promenade du Portage, or Rue Eddy, this is a very direct route.
Cross the Alexandra Bridge and you'll arrive on St. Patrick Street. Turn right onto Dalhousie Street and you're there. This route takes about 7 to 10 minutes and drops you practically at our door. It's also a beautiful drive with views of Parliament Hill and the river.
If you're coming from the Gatineau sector, Buckingham, Masson-Angers, or anywhere in the eastern part of the city, the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge (Autoroute 5/Highway 5) is your best bet. Take the bridge south into Ottawa. You'll end up on King Edward Avenue. Turn right onto Rideau Street, then left onto Dalhousie Street.
Total drive time from the Gatineau sector: approximately 12 to 18 minutes. From Buckingham or Masson-Angers, expect 25 to 35 minutes depending on highway traffic.
The ByWard Market has several parking options close to the salon:
Pro tip from our Gatineau regulars: If you're coming during off-peak hours (midday on weekdays or Saturday mornings), you'll usually find street parking right near the salon. If you're coming on a busy Friday or Saturday afternoon, go straight to the ByWard Market Parking Garage to save time.
Public transit option: STO buses from Gatineau connect to downtown Ottawa, and the OC Transpo Rideau station on the Confederation Line is a 5-minute walk from Salon Rouge. If you prefer not to drive, transit is a solid option.
Every service at Salon Rouge starts with a consultation. We want to understand your goals, assess your hair's current condition, and recommend the right approach before we begin. Here's what we offer.
A great haircut is the foundation of everything. At Salon Rouge, every cut is customized to your hair type, face shape, and daily routine. Whether you want a clean, classic bob, long layers with movement, a textured pixie, or a sharp men's cut, our stylists take the time to get the shape, balance, and finish exactly right.
We don't do cookie-cutter cuts. Your stylist will look at how your hair falls naturally, where it tends to be thicker or thinner, and how much time you want to spend styling at home. The goal is a cut that looks great on the day you leave and still looks great three weeks later.
Children's cuts are also available, and we're patient with younger clients. If your little one is nervous, we'll take it slow and make the experience a positive one.
Balayage has become one of our most requested services, and for good reason. It's a hand-painted highlighting technique that creates soft, natural-looking dimension. The result is a sun-kissed, lived-in look that grows out beautifully without a harsh root line.
Our balayage specialists understand that no two heads of hair are the same. We customize the placement, the tone, and the intensity based on your natural colour, your skin tone, and the overall look you're going for. Whether you want a subtle, barely-there warmth or a dramatic contrast, we can do it.
Balayage is also incredibly low-maintenance compared to traditional foil highlights. Most clients can go 3 to 4 months between touch-ups, which is great for Gatineau clients who want beautiful colour without constant appointments.
For clients who prefer a more uniform, all-over brightness, traditional foil highlights are still one of the best options. We do full highlights, partial highlights, face-framing highlights, and lowlights to add depth and dimension. Our colourists are meticulous about placement, ensuring the highlights blend naturally and enhance your overall look.
We also offer babylights, which are ultra-fine highlights that mimic the natural dimension you see in children's hair. They're subtle, sophisticated, and perfect for clients who want a polished look without anything too bold.
Whether you're covering grey, refreshing your natural colour, or going for a completely new shade, our colour services are thorough and precise. We use professional colour lines from Schwarzkopf, Redken, and Wella, and we choose the right formula based on your hair's porosity, texture, and condition.
Root touch-ups are available for clients who need to maintain their colour between full services. We blend the new growth seamlessly so there's no visible line of demarcation. For grey coverage, we offer both full coverage and blending options, depending on how much grey you have and how much you want to cover.
This is one of Amir's specialties and one of the reasons clients from Gatineau (and beyond) seek us out. Colour correction is the process of fixing colour that's gone wrong, whether from a salon mishap, a home dye job, or years of accumulated damage from improper colour application.
Colour correction can be complex. It might involve removing unwanted tones, rebuilding the hair's integrity, and gradually working toward the colour you actually wanted. It almost always takes more than one session, and it requires a colourist who really understands colour theory and hair chemistry. That's what you get at Salon Rouge.
If you're coming to us for colour correction, please book a consultation first. We'll assess your hair in person, discuss your goals, and give you an honest timeline and cost estimate before we start any work.
If you struggle with frizzy, unruly hair, a keratin treatment can be life-changing. This smoothing treatment infuses keratin protein into the hair cuticle, reducing frizz, adding shine, and making your hair dramatically easier to manage. The results typically last 3 to 5 months.
Keratin treatments are especially popular with our Gatineau clients who deal with humidity in the summer months. When you step outside in July and August, the Ottawa-Gatineau humidity can turn freshly styled hair into a frizzy mess. A keratin treatment eliminates that problem and cuts your styling time significantly.
We offer several keratin treatment options at different price points, so we can match the right treatment to your hair type and your budget.
Hair botox is a deep conditioning and repair treatment that restores moisture, smoothness, and elasticity to damaged or aging hair. Unlike keratin treatments, hair botox does not use formaldehyde and is focused on conditioning rather than straightening. It's ideal for hair that's dry, brittle, or showing signs of damage from colour, heat styling, or environmental stress.
The results are noticeable immediately: smoother texture, enhanced shine, and hair that feels healthier and more manageable. Hair botox treatments typically last 2 to 4 months and can be done alongside colour services.
Want more length, more volume, or both? Salon Rouge offers professional hair extension services including tape-in, fusion, and clip-in options. Our stylists are trained in proper extension application techniques that protect your natural hair while giving you the fullness and length you want.
Extensions require a consultation to determine the best method, the right colour match, and the amount of hair needed. We'll walk you through the maintenance requirements and the expected lifespan of your extensions so there are no surprises.
Olaplex is a bond-building treatment that repairs and prevents damage at the molecular level. We offer Olaplex as a standalone treatment and as an add-on to colour, lightening, and chemical services. If your hair has been compromised by previous colour work or heat damage, Olaplex can make a significant difference in how your hair looks and feels.
We also carry Olaplex take-home products for continued maintenance between salon visits.
Perms are back, and they've come a long way from the tight, crunchy curls of the 1980s. Modern perms can create soft waves, beachy texture, or defined curls, depending on the rod size and wrapping technique. Our stylists know how to create natural-looking texture that works with your hair's existing characteristics.
If you're considering a perm, book a consultation first. We need to assess your hair's condition and history (especially if you've had colour or chemical treatments) to make sure a perm is safe and will give you the results you want.
Have an event coming up? A wedding, a gala, a holiday party, or just a night out? Our blowout and styling services will get you ready. We offer everything from a classic blowout to formal updos, braids, and special occasion styling.
Blowouts are also a great way to try Salon Rouge for the first time. It's a lower-commitment service that lets you experience our salon, meet our team, and see the quality of our work before booking a bigger service like colour or a cut.
Curly hair needs a stylist who understands curls. Anny, our Brazilian-born curly hair specialist, knows how to cut, shape, and style natural curls and coils. She uses techniques designed specifically for curly textures, cutting the hair dry so she can see exactly how each curl falls and adjusting the shape accordingly.
If you have curly hair and you've been getting it cut straight and hoping for the best, this is different. Anny works with your curl pattern, not against it. The result is a shape that enhances your natural texture and makes your curls look their absolute best.
Every stylist at Salon Rouge was chosen for their skill, their professionalism, and their genuine love for what they do. Here's who you'll meet when you visit.
Amir opened Salon Rouge in 2004 after decades of building his craft in some of the best salons in the world. With over 30 years of experience, he's a certified specialist in Schwarzkopf, Redken, and Wella colour systems. He won the Best Colourist award from Schwarzkopf, and he's known throughout the Ottawa-Gatineau region as the person to see when colour has gone wrong.
Amir's specialties include corrective colour, precision cutting, and advanced balayage. He's meticulous, patient, and honest. If what you want isn't achievable in one session, he'll tell you that upfront. If a different approach would give you a better result, he'll explain why. Clients come from across Ontario and Quebec specifically to sit in his chair, and many of his most loyal clients are from Gatineau.
Parisa has been with Salon Rouge for over 7 years and has built a loyal following of her own. She's known for her warm, welcoming personality and her ability to make every client feel comfortable and heard. She speaks Persian, English, and Turkish, which makes her a great fit for our diverse clientele.
Parisa specializes in balayage, highlights, and precision cuts. She has a keen eye for colour and a talent for creating looks that are both on-trend and wearable. She's great at understanding what clients want even when they're not sure how to describe it, and she's patient enough to talk through every option until you feel confident in the plan.
Jane joined the Salon Rouge team in 2015 and has been a cornerstone of the salon ever since. She speaks Mandarin in addition to English, and she's built a strong following in the Ottawa-Gatineau Asian community. Her technical precision and attention to detail are outstanding.
Jane is particularly skilled at cuts that work with fine and straight hair textures, and she's also an excellent colourist. She's the kind of stylist who remembers exactly what she did at your last appointment and builds on it each time. Her clients trust her completely, and that trust is well-earned.
Danielle has been with Salon Rouge since 2006, which makes her one of the longest-tenured members of the team. As salon manager, she keeps things running smoothly behind the scenes, but she's also an active stylist with a full book of loyal clients.
Danielle is great at working with clients who want a change but aren't sure where to start. She'll help you figure out what will work for your face shape, your lifestyle, and your comfort level. She's known for making clients feel at ease, especially those who might be nervous about trying something new.
Anny brings a unique perspective to the Salon Rouge team. Originally from Brazil, she has deep expertise in working with curly, wavy, and textured hair. She speaks Portuguese and English, and she understands the specific challenges that come with managing natural curls in the Ottawa-Gatineau climate.
Anny uses dry-cutting techniques for curly hair, which means she cuts each curl in its natural state to get the shape exactly right. She's also knowledgeable about curl-specific products and routines, and she'll help you build an at-home regimen that keeps your curls defined and frizz-free between appointments.
Your experience at Salon Rouge starts before you even sit in the chair. Jordan and Fayja are our client coordinators, and they're the friendly voices you'll hear when you call and the welcoming faces you'll see when you walk through the door. They handle scheduling, answer questions about services, and make sure your visit runs on time and without a hitch.
Fayja also serves as our salon manager, helping coordinate the team and ensuring that every client's experience is seamless from start to finish. If you have questions about which stylist is right for you or what to expect at your first appointment, Jordan and Fayja are happy to help.
Walking into Salon Rouge for the first time, you'll notice it feels different from other salons. It's not rushed. It's not chaotic. There's music, good coffee, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes you feel like you have all the time in the world, even though everything is running on schedule behind the scenes.
Before your appointment: When you book online or call us, we'll ask a few questions about what you're looking for. If it's a colour service, we might ask you to send reference photos. If it's a correction, we'll want to know your colour history. This pre-appointment communication helps your stylist prepare and ensures we make the most of your time together.
Your consultation: Every first appointment starts with a face-to-face conversation between you and your stylist. This isn't a quick "what do you want?" at the chair. It's a real discussion about your hair goals, your daily routine, and any concerns you have. We'll look at reference images together, feel your hair's texture, assess its condition, and make recommendations based on what we see.
During your service: Whether it's a 30-minute cut or a 3-hour colour correction, your stylist is focused on you. We don't overbook. We don't rush. We check in with you throughout the process to make sure you're comfortable and happy with how things are going. If something needs to be adjusted, we do it right then, not after.
Before you leave: Your stylist will show you the finished result from every angle. They'll walk you through styling tips you can use at home. If products were used during your service, they'll explain what each one does and whether it's something you'd benefit from using at home. There's no hard sell on products, just honest recommendations.
After your appointment: Great salons don't disappear after you pay. If you have questions about your new colour in the days following your appointment, if you need styling advice, or if something doesn't look right, call us. We stand behind our work and we want you to be 100% happy with your results.
For Gatineau clients making the drive across the river, we want the experience to be worth every minute. From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, everything is designed to make you feel taken care of.
Don't just take our word for it. Here's what clients from the Gatineau side of the river have to say about their experience at Salon Rouge.
"I live in Hull and I'd been going to salons in Gatineau for years. A friend recommended Salon Rouge and I haven't looked back. The drive is 10 minutes and the difference in quality is night and day. Amir fixed a colour disaster that another salon caused, and now my hair has never looked better."
- Marie-Claire L., Hull, QC
"I was nervous about crossing the river for a haircut, but Salon Rouge made it so easy. I booked online, the directions were simple, and Parisa made me feel right at home. She spoke to me in French when I wasn't sure of the English term for what I wanted. That meant a lot."
- Sophie T., Aylmer, QC
"My curly hair has been a challenge my whole life. Every salon in Gatineau either wanted to straighten it or just didn't know what to do with it. Anny at Salon Rouge actually understands curls. She cuts it dry, she knows how the curls will fall, and for the first time in my life I actually love my hair."
- Fatima R., Gatineau Sector, QC
"I work in downtown Ottawa so stopping at Salon Rouge after work is actually easier than going to a salon near my house in Gatineau. I book a Thursday evening appointment, get my balayage touched up, and I'm home by 8:30. The late hours on Wednesdays and Thursdays are a huge plus."
- Valérie M., Hull, QC
"I've been bringing my whole family to Salon Rouge for about 8 years now. We live in Gatineau and the drive is nothing. Danielle does my hair, Jane does my daughter's, and my husband sees Amir. It's become our family's go-to spot, and I recommend it to everyone I know on the Gatineau side."
- Nathalie P., Gatineau Sector, QC
"I got a keratin treatment at Salon Rouge last spring and it completely changed how I deal with summer humidity. Living near the Gatineau River, the moisture in the air used to destroy my hair every June through September. Not anymore. Best investment I've made for my hair."
- Isabelle D., Aylmer, QC
It depends on where in Gatineau you're starting from. From Hull, the drive is about 8 to 12 minutes via the Portage Bridge or Alexandra Bridge. From the Gatineau sector, it's about 12 to 18 minutes via the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge. From Aylmer, expect about 15 to 20 minutes. Rush hour can add 5 to 10 minutes, so plan accordingly.
If you're in Hull, the Portage Bridge or Alexandra Bridge will get you there fastest. The Alexandra Bridge drops you almost directly into the ByWard Market. If you're in the Gatineau sector or east of the city, take the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge. All three routes are simple and well-signed.
Yes. The ByWard Market has several parking options including the ByWard Market Parking Garage (70 Clarence Street, a 2-minute walk), metered street parking on Dalhousie and surrounding streets, and additional lots nearby. During off-peak hours, street parking is usually easy to find. On busy weekends, the parking garages are your best bet.
Yes. Several members of our team speak French, so you're welcome to communicate in whichever language you're most comfortable with. We also have stylists who speak Mandarin, Persian, Turkish, and Portuguese.
Every first appointment includes a consultation at the beginning of the session. For most services (cuts, blowouts, simple colour), this consultation happens at the start of your booked time. For more complex services like colour corrections, major colour changes, or extensions, we recommend booking a separate consultation appointment first so we can properly assess your hair and create a plan.
Prices vary depending on the service and stylist. Precision haircuts start at $15, balayage starts at $150, keratin treatments start at $300, and hair botox starts at $425. For an accurate quote, call us at (613) 241-1110 or book a consultation. We'll give you a clear estimate before any work begins.
From a practical standpoint, no. You don't need an Ontario health card or any special documentation to visit a hair salon in Ottawa. The only difference is that Ontario charges HST (13%) rather than Quebec's combined GST/QST (14.975%). So you may actually save slightly on tax compared to a Gatineau salon. Payment methods, booking, and everything else work exactly the same.
Yes. Our online booking system is available 24/7 at our booking page. You can choose your stylist, select your service, and pick a time that works for you. You're also welcome to call us at (613) 241-1110 during business hours.
For weekday appointments, a week's notice is usually enough. For Saturday appointments or appointments with specific stylists, we recommend booking 2 to 3 weeks ahead. If you're booking a colour correction or an extensive service, earlier booking helps us reserve the right amount of time for you.
We understand that plans change. We ask for at least 24 hours' notice for cancellations or rescheduling. This allows us to offer the time slot to another client. You can call us or manage your appointment through the booking system.
Yes, we offer gift cards in any amount. They're a great gift for friends or family members in Gatineau who might want to try Salon Rouge. Give us a call or stop by the salon to purchase one.
Our salon is located at street level in the ByWard Market. If you have specific accessibility needs, please call us ahead of your appointment and we'll make sure everything is arranged for a comfortable visit.
